What is Coordinated Entry?

Coordinated Entry (CE) in the River Valleys CoC Region is a HUD-mandated, evidence-based system designed to ensure that everyone experiencing a housing crisis has fair and equitable access to housing that becomes available in the homeless response system.

The goals of Coordinated Entry are to:
  • Move as quickly as possible from homelessness to housing, and
  • Prioritize help for people who most need the available housing and services, no matter what barriers they may encounter.

How Coordinated Entry works

Coordinated Entry works for the homeless response system much like a medical triage system works in healthcare.
  • Assistance to prevent emergency needs
  • Common entry points available in each community
  • Standardized intake or assessment for needs
  • Assistance provided based on assessed priority (urgency)
  • Referrals to providers in the network for housing and services

Housing types people can access through CE are:
  • Permanent supportive housing
  • Rapid Re-Housing
  • Transitional Housing
  • Other permanent housing services designated for people experiencing homelessness

Crisis housing like emergency shelters are not prioritized, but they may be access points to Coordinated Entry and other housing.
